FEEL BETTER – A variety of free tests and demonstrations will be offered in a Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Seneca Babcock Community Center, 1168 Seneca St.
Catholic Health will give blood pressure and bone density screening. Training in dealing with opiate addiction and the use of Narcon will be provided by the State Department of Health. Trocaire College will give a presentation on healthy cooking. Help on quitting smoking will be offered by Roswell Park Cancer Institute. There also will be door prizes and giveaways. BRAIN POWER – Two more sessions are scheduled this week as the Town of Hamburg Senior Services continues its series of presentations and workshops in the Hamburg Senior Community Center, 4540 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg, in conjunction with University Express, a partnership of the Erie County Department of Senior Services and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).
Topic of the first one, at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, is “The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer’s.” Finances will be the focus at 10:30 a.m. Friday in “Federal Reserve, Interest Rates and the U.S. Economy.” Classes are free, but registration is required. Call 646-0665.

Dan Szczesny

REDISCOVERED – When journalist and travel writer Dan Szczesny drove past his grandmother’s house on Buffalo’s East Side not long ago, it inspired him to dig into his long-neglected Polish roots. Now living in Manchester, N.H., he returns to give a presentation on his discoveries, “Polish Boy Abroad: Coming Home to Buffalo,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Student Center at Villa Maria College, 240 Pine Ridge Road, Cheektowaga.
His lecture, one of a series of appearances in the area this week, is sponsored by the Polish Genealogical Society of New York State, and is free and open to the public. For more info, on Szczesny and his books, visit his website at danszczesny.com.

FEARLESS PIONEER – Actress, author and storyteller Gretchen Murray Sepik will give a historical portrayal, “Mary Jemison, the White Woman of the Genesee,” at 7 p.m. Thursday in the C. Dee Wright Center, 11 Church St., Akron. Presented by the Newstead Historical Society, the program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at 6:30.

MOVIE MAGIC – Thursday is the deadline for reservations for the next monthly luncheon meeting of WNY Pen Women at noon Saturday in Kebab and Curry restaurant, 8445 Main St., Clarence. Speaker will be Erie Community College English professor Ellene Phufas, who will talk about Hollywood and the movies.

LIVELY ARTS – Paintings, sculpture, dance and music will be part of the 2017 African American Arts Exposition presented by the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, 450 Masten Ave. There also will be a culinary arts demonstration and a panel on the art of natural hair care.
Highlight will be at 3 p.m., when actors from the Paul Robeson Theatre will give a stage reading of “The Adventures of the Black Girl in Her Search for God,” playwright Lisa Codrington’s adaptation of a George Bernard Shaw novella. It will be followed by a panel discussion including the playwright and local faith leaders.
“We are thrilled that Ms. Codrington … will join us to dialogue with the audience on their reactions to the play,” says Thomasina R. Stenhouse, who chairs the Delta Arts and Letters Committee. “When I saw it at the Shaw Festival, I immediately thought about how we could bring it to Buffalo.”

DEADLINE AHEAD – Reservations are needed by Wednesday for the Gift Card Bonanza on May 17 in the Winchester Fire Hall, 514 Harlem Road, West Seneca, hosted by the Winchester Nites Home Bureau. The program also will include historical reenactor Denise Reichard as pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart. Donation is $3 and includes desserts, coffee and tea. To make a reservation, call 319-0399.

MUSICAL MEMORIES – Rick Falkowski, founder of the Buffalo Music Awards and the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, will be guest speaker at a program sponsored by the Friends of the East Aurora Library at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the library at 550 Main St., East Aurora.
His talk, “History of Buffalo Music and Entertainment,” will cover everything from early theaters and vaudeville to the Crystal Beach Ballroom and rock ‘n roll. The program is free, but registration is required. Call the library at 652-4440.
