Theresa “Soni” Guzmán

Theresa “Soni” Guzmán Stokes, Managing Director of The Rhode Island Black Heritage Society (RIBHS) says a grant provided by the National Park Service is allowing them to research African Americans’ struggle for Civil Rights in Rhode Island during the 20th century.

“Rhode Island has a long history of African American participation in almost every aspect of life,” Stokes says.

“It wasn’t so much not being able to sit at the front of the bus, it wasn’t those types of issues so much, but things like fair housing, equal rights in jobs, equal pay, those are the kinds of things they were struggling for,” says Stokes.

RIBHS has multiple events planned for 2018, including a Black History Month Commemoration Breakfast on February 28 and their Annual Black Heritage Ball on March 31.
