Little Mix’s famous friends begin to unfollow Jesy Nelson amid backlash

The fall out between Jesy Nelson and her former Little Mix bandmates has reached a new level as friends loyal to the band have started to unfollow the solo starlet.

An explosive debate has raged over the past week after 30-year-old Jesy released the music video for her debut solo single, Boyz.

The video is dripping with references to early naughties rap music videos – sparking accusations that Jesy is trying to appropriate and capitalise on black culture and black history for her own gain.

There have also been accusations that 30-year-old Little Mix star Leigh-Anne Pinnock hit out at Jesy by messaging a fan to request they make a video accusing the Boyz singer of ‘blackfishing’ – a from of cultural appropriation.

Now a number of music friends and collaborators who have worked with Little Mix over the years appear to have given Jesy the cold shoulder amid the ongoing backlash – as they appear to have started ‘unfollowing’ the star online.

The Sun reports that fellow singer Anne Marie, who collaborated with the band on a song called Kiss My (Uh Oh): “has made it clear where her allegiance lies” and has “unfollowed Jesy Nelson”.

The Sun also claims: “Paloma Faith and MNEK have supported the group publicly since the argument erupted.”

While it is unclear exactly how Paloma has supported the ladies, hit music writer MNEK drew attention from fans when he praised black female musicians – while taking aim at white performers who get too much credit.

In a tweet issues in celebration of Black History Month – which takes place throughout October – he wrote: “from the heart, I just wanna take this time to promote some talented BLACK female artists who I feel deserve more of the shine than others (others being white people, yes, get uncomfortable) are getting.”

The tweet was issued just hours after Jesy released her music video – with many fans suggesting the star was taking aim at the newly solo singer, although MNEK did not make any direct reference to the former Little Mix star.

One fan tweeted: “damn @MNEK is so real for tweeting all these talented black artists during all this jesy nelson s**t.”

There had been earlier accusations that the Little Mix ladies had unfollowed Jesy on social media – however unconfirmed ‘leaked’ DM messages from Leigh-Anne have suggested the solo star actually blocked her former bandmates instead.

Jesy’s Boyz collaborator, Nicki Minaj – who raps on the single – has defended the star amid the ongoing backlash.

The 38-year-old Trinidadian singer branded Little Mix “clowns” and accused them of being “jealous” of Jesy’s solo success.

During a lively Instagram Live debate with Jesy, Nicki hit out at her former co-stars and her critics.

While Jesy herself didn’t address the controversy with Leigh-Anne, she laughed when Nicki ranted against her former bandmate.

Meanwhile, Jesy herself has rejected the cultural appropriation claims made against her, saying: “I’m very aware that I’m a white British woman; I’ve never said that I wasn’t.

“But I mean, like, I love Black culture. I love Black music. That’s all I know; it’s what I grew up on.”
