Diane Pieri at No. 5 Butchie Allie
No. 5 Butchie Allie at 1175 S. 13th St. presents Diane Pieri: Once Upon A Time from June 4 through July 30.
Pieri creates sublime, delicate works on paper that weave meaning, symbol and color in cascading landscape compositions. Each work is a microcosm of multiple intimate compositions that unfold under close inspection. Upon exhaling, they reveal a universe of saturated color and texture as the whole comes into view.
Pieri is unapologetically driven to create radical beauty. She finds power and freedom in embracing every glorious opportunity to be purely decorative. Her newest images incorporate 3D elements that billow unexpectedly from quiet surfaces.
Pieri will host a decorated bookmaking workshop on June 25 from noon to 3 p.m., the family-friendly event is for ages 6 and up. Children must be accompanied by parents, and the workshop is limited to 10 participants. In exchange for the experience, donations to Philabundance will be accepted.
New exhibition at Paradigm
Paradigm Gallery + Studio at 746 S. 4th Street will present a solo exhibition by local artist Alex Eckman-Lawn called “Monolith/Relic.”
The exhibition features three-dimensional collages borne of a hybrid process of digital and hand techniques and is a continuation of Eckman-Lawn’s well-honed mixed media practice that embraces his growing interest in chaos, chance, and the relinquishment of control.
Featuring source imagery from classical sculpture to botanical illustration, the works in Monolith/Relic draw from expansive archives of visual culture to create entirely new imagery and meaning. Fragments of visual material, hand-cut and arranged by the artist in sequentially spaced layers, coalesce into new forms that exemplify the multiplicity and serendipity of the medium.

Catholic Charities Appeal Night with the Phillies
The Catholic Charities Appeal is partnering with the Philadelphia Phillies for its ninth annual “CCA Night with the Phillies” at Citizens Bank Park on June 30.
A portion of the proceeds from all tickets sold through a dedicated link will directly benefit CCA beneficiary programs that provide support to those experiencing homelessness, special-needs students, food cupboards, afterschool programs and more.
The Phillies will host the Atlanta Braves that night. Seating will be located in the Outfield (sections 101-107) at $38 per ticket, Pavilion (sections 201-205) at $30 per ticket and Pavilion Deck (section 310) at $20 per ticket.

If 500 or more tickets are sold, a student from Our Lady of Confidence School of Special Education, a CCA beneficiary, will throw out the first pitch of the game. In addition, a CCA beneficiary will sing the national anthem.
Comcast offering grants to biz owned by women, ‘people of color’
Comcast announced a new round of cities, including Philadelphia, will receive grants from the Comcast RISE Investment Fund, providing an additional $5 million to hundreds of small businesses owned by “people of color,” including black, indigenous, Hispanic and Asian-American owners, and women.
Beginning on June 1, and through June 14, eligible businesses can apply for a $10,000 grant at www.ComcastRISE.com. A total of 100 grants per city will be announced and awarded in July.
As part of the initial Comcast RISE Investment Fund program, the company previously awarded $1 million in April 2021 to 100 small black-owned businesses in Philadelphia and Chester.
“While we know that no single organization can solve historic and systemic inequities overnight, we are committed to taking tangible actions that can drive long-term impact and change,” said Dennis Mathew, senior vice president, Comcast’s Freedom Region. “Comcast RISE and the Comcast RISE Investment Fund offer the opportunity for small businesses owned by ‘people of color’ and women to help grow their businesses, create jobs and play a vital role in supporting our communities.”
Hair salon owner Chanda Anderson, who received a grant last year, said, “When the pandemic hit and we had to shut down our business, I was distraught. My only means of income was suddenly taken away, but, meanwhile, my bills kept coming in. The $10,000 grant from Comcast RISE not only helped me stay afloat, I used it to purchase hair for my clients and actually generate some income. At a time when I was seeing one client a day in my house versus five to seven clients a day pre-pandemic, it helped more than you can imagine.”
To help drive awareness about the program, Comcast has awarded support to the following local nonprofits: African-American Chamber of Commerce of PA, NJ & DE, Asian American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia, Greater Philadelphia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Independence Business Alliance, The Enterprise Center and Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations.
In addition, Comcast RISE invests in ongoing mentorship and resources to help businesses succeed over the long term. The program has partnered with Ureeka, an online platform for entrepreneurs, to provide grant recipients with business coaching to help build skills in company foundation, growing customers and financial stability.
“Ureeka is proud to partner with Comcast RISE to grow small businesses nationwide with coaching and digital services,” said co-founder Melissa Bradley. “We know there are stark disparities in access to capital and resources for entrepreneurs of color and women entrepreneurs.”
Comcast RISE is part of Comcast’s ongoing efforts to advance “digital equity” and help provide “underrepresented” small business owners with access to the digital tools and funding they need to thrive. Over the next 10 years, Comcast has committed $1 billion to programs and partnerships that will reach tens of millions of people with the skills, opportunities and resources they need to succeed.

The River Feeds Back, going from June 1 to Oct. 30, is an immersive sound installation created by artists Annea Lockwood and Liz Phillips. The exhibit brings visitors into the deep sonic environment of the Schuylkill River watershed through recordings and a layered sound map that captures glimpses of the river system including the life of aquatic insects, eels, fish and swirling currents.
Ocean Bound will run from Aug. 20 to Jan. 15, 2023.
Explore ocean depths
A new exhibition at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, reveals the mysteries of the ocean’s greatest depths.
Extreme Deep: Mission to the Abyss invites museum visitors to explore newly discovered life forms, thermal vents, deep-sea research submersibles and shipwrecks including the Titanic.
Museum visitors will observe firsthand the technology that only recently has allowed scientists to travel to the ocean floor and discover the creatures that thrive in total darkness. They can test their skill at manipulating a robotic arm of a replica of the submersible Alvin to pick up lava rocks and clams similar to what scientists do to gather samples of creatures from the ocean floor.
Visitors can also fly a remotely operated vehicle over a model of the Titanic’s deck and, in another display, see how currents created by superheated water erupting from thermal vents carry nutrients that support life forms few ever dreamed existed.

Ukrainian festival in the summer
