In brief: Mavuno Festival, fire safety fair and more around the Quaker Valley

Mavuno Festival returns

For 26 years, the Mavuno Festival has celebrated Black, Indigenous and People of Color artistry and culture, thanks to BIPOC artists and educators of the Sewickley community. It’s back at Sweetwater Center for the Arts through Oct. 28.

The art exhibition curated by Steve Alexis celebrates Black artists and features Pittsburgh-based artists Petra Floyd, Dominick McDuffie, Zeal Eva and Darrin Milliner. “The story I’m trying to tell is pay attention to what these makers are saying, don’t just pay attention to what they look like,” Alexis said.

On Sept. 23, enjoy The Sounds of Freedom with Anita Levels, a presentation about the Africans’ experience in America and the American music genres such as blues, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and hip hop. The workshop will focus on African cultural elements, vocal stylings, and instruments that migrated across the Atlantic during enslavement, were preserved and are still present today. The event will fill quickly, so please register.
