  • Slain musician AKA received the Best Male Southern Africa award at the recently held AFRIMMAs.
  • Nominated in the same category were Sjava, DJ Maphorisa, Musa Keys and Costa Titch.
  • Costa Titch also died earlier in the year after suddenly collapsing during a performance.
  • This is the second posthumous award he has received this month after his and Nasty C’s Lemons (Lemonade) was named Song of the Year at the DStv Content Creator Awards.

More than six months since he was brutally gunned down in Durban, AKA is still on a winning streak. The rapper received another award at the recently held African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMAs).

At the 10th staging of the awards, on Sunday in Dallas, Texas, AKA received the Best Male Southern Africa award.

“Thank you to the Megacy for voting and bringing another award home. Kiernan’s legacy continues to live because of all of you,” his parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes, said.

“The AFRIMMAs were special to him, and winning this award for a third time is something we, as a family, will cherish.”

AKA was previously nominated for two AFRIMMAs in 2014 and bagged the same number of awards in 2015.

“AFRIMMA was Kiernan’s first award on American soil. To receive this award in 2023 is testament to his great artistry and the love from South Africans and Africans as a whole,” his label, VTH Season, said. “His impact continues now and to infinity.”

Nominated in the same category as AKA were Sjava, DJ Maphorisa, Musa Keys and Costa Titch, who also died earlier in the year after suddenly collapsing during a performance.

This is the second posthumous award the father of one has received this month. At the DStv Content Creator Awards, AKA received the Song of the Year for his and Nasty C’s Lemons (Lemonade).
