Free tax preparation offered by the Oroville African American Family and Cultural Center

The African American Family and Cultural Center is assisting individuals and families with tax preparations free of charge as tax season approaches.

The center has offered the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA), for over 10 years, which comprises of five volunteers who sit down with individuals to go over tax information and discuss returns.

The center will start processing taxes on Jan. 29 until April 15 on an appointment and walk-in basis. The schedule is as follows:

Monday’s, Tuesday’s, and Thursday’s:

  • By appointment only

Wednesday’s:

  • Walk-in’s only
  • 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Assistant Director of the African American Family and Cultural Center says the need is there for many residents as the economy continues to rise.

“It’s so expensive to get taxes done and a lot of our community members don’t make enough to get a large return, so some of them actually pay more to have it processed than they receive back in return. We talk to them about making sure that they try to spend their tax returns in their community so the money funnels back to their community in order to make the community better,” Smith explained.

The center asks individuals to bring a copy of last year’s return, Social Security Card, photo ID, tax-related forms, including W2, 1099, 1098, etc., documentation for deductions, credits, childcare provider tax ID, and a voided check for direct deposit of refund.

In your appointment, the center asks you to fill out forms and sign documentation to confirm you are leaving tax information for preparation. An experienced and trained tax preparer will go over all information and answer questions.

In a follow-up appointment, you will return to the center to pick up the completed return, with the center reviewing returns with you. You will receive a copy of the files, in addition to all original documents.

The center does not process returns that are ‘married filing separately’.

The center is located at 3300 Spencer Ave, Oroville, CA, 95966. To make an appointment via phone, call (530) 532-1205. You can also make an appointment by clicking here.
