Black History Month exhibit opens at Butler

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – For Black History Month, the Butler Institute of Art is displaying art from African American artists.

Dr. Dee Banks, a physician, curated the exhibit. It’s called Greatness Revealed: The Art Of African Americans from the Butler Collection.

She said the art comes from a mix of regional and national artists.

The Butler also had a lecture on Harlem Renaissance Art, which comes from the 1920s to 1940s.

Banks took the opportunity to pay respects to African American art.

“Often, our African American artists haven’t been mainstreamed into American art. So, I saw this as an opportunity to pull out some of the works from the Butler’s permanent collection for Black History Month,” she said.

The exhibit is in the Mesaros Gallery on the basement level of the Butler. The exhibition will run through March 17.
